It was only recently that everyone in Kollywood, from stars to
directors, technicians and even production houses, got on to the social media
bandwagon. Now, many are realizing exploring more options when it comes to
online content.
Two weeks back, a leading music label began streaming a web series
on their YouTube page. And, now, one of the oldest production houses in India
announced that it is entering the digital domain with Ithuvum Kadanthu Pogum, a
55-minute short feature film.
Says Aparna Guhan of the production house, “We realized that we
have fans worldwide and the Internet is a strong medium to connect with them.
So, we are planning to create content for our online platform. Unlike our
traditional content, this will be more relatable to the youth, as it is young
people who are online.” She adds that they are considering a television screening
of the film as well.
Meanwhile, Swaminathan Raamanathan, who is one of the creators of
Happy To Be Single, a web series targeted at the 20-35 age group, says that
their attempt has received positive response. “We are picking up slowly in terms
of numbers, especially because we do not have any known faces in the cast.
However, celebrities like Venkat Prabhu, Anirudh, Amy Jackson, and Balaji Mohan
promoted our series on their social media pages, and we have managed to get
over 60,000 views for the two episodes and promo songs which we have streamed
so far,” informs Swaminathan.
He says that the challenge for any Internet-related content is to
get the intended audience interested and he claims that their show has been
able to do so as their fan following on Facebook shot up to 6,000 in the week
between the first and second episodes. Having tied up with a well-known music
label has also enabled them to monetize, he says. “We are generating revenue
for the clicks which we are sharing with the label,” he says.
Let
us all appreciate the Young Tamil actor’s interest for getting the large number
of audience support for their serial “Happy to be Single.”

Whether Karunanidhi and Kanimozhi, had misappropriated 200 crore in World Classical Tamil Conference.
Whether Karunanidhi
and Kanimozhi, had misappropriated 200 crore in World Classical Tamil Conference.
The Madras high court has ordered a
vigilance probe into a complaint that former chief minister M Karunanidhi had
misappropriated funds meant for the World classical
Tamil conference held in Coimbatore in June 2010. Justice R Mala, before whom
the petition filed by advocate B Ramesh Babu came up for hearing on Monday16-9-2013,
said an expeditious inquiry should be conducted into
the allegation and that a case should be registered if commission of any
cognizable offence was made out.
According to Ramesh Babu, while the
then chief minister Karunanidhi claimed that 380 crore was spent on the conference,
a later press release claimed 301 crore had been spent. Information obtained
under the RTI Act showed only 151.22 crore had been spent. Another RTI plea
revealed that 262.63 crore was spent on the meet. Ramesh Babu claimed that
Karunanidhi and his associates, including his daughter Kanimozhi, had
misappropriated more than 200 crore.
State public prosecutor S Shanmugavelayutham said that an inquiry has begun.
We can get the true pictures only after Vigilance enquiry. Let
us wait.
